Despite not being very impressed with
Aktau, I was more than in awe when I got to see the Sherkala mountain and learn
its story...
About
20km from the village of Shetpe, with uplands of Aktau ("White
Mountain") and Karatau ("Black Mountain") along the way, there
it is, in its glory- Sherkala "The Lion's Mountain".
From the
front it looks like a giant yurt, yet if you follow the road that leads to the
mountain it changes its form and starts reminding a lion in a profile.
In the
past the Mangistau region was inhabited by Turkmen people coming to the area in
the 10th c. A.D looking for water and grassland. The story has it that local people
from around Sherkala attacked by hostile invading forces, probably Kazakhs,
were hiding in the mountain for 4 months. Invaders were puzzled as to how
defenders of Sherkala survived for so long without water. They paid the traitor
and found out that there was a deep well running through the centre of the
mountain. Invaders dug the tunnel, intercepted the well and cut of the water
source. The locals had to surrender...
The best
way to get to see the mountain is to get a marshrutka or Gazelle to Shetpe/Bazaar. There are also taxis ready to give you a ride to Shetpe or even to Sherkala for around 5000-7000 KZT. I took a gazelle from Aktau Bus Station (580 KZT- one way; 2h ride)
Then get
yourselves prepared for some serious haggling. A taxi to Sherkala, both ways +
waiting time and occasional stops on the way (pictures ;). I managed to get it
for 3000 KZT, but I'm guessing it can be done for 2000-2500 KZT if you are
lucky :)

Pomimo
tego, że miastem Aktau zbytnio zachwycona nie byłam, Region Mangistau ze swoim księżycowym
krajobrazem i historyczną przeszłością zafascynował mnie w pełni.
Szczególnie
góra Sherkala („Góra Lwa”), położona gdzieś pośrodku stepu, dziś średnio
popularna atrakcja turystyczna, kiedyś twierdza obronna. Góra ta położona 20 km
od najbliższej wsi, Shetpe, pomiędzy masywami Aktau („Biała Góra”) i Karatau („Czarna
Góra”) z frontu wygląda jak gigantyczna jurta, dopiero gdy podjedziemy do niej
od północy, zaczyna przypominać profil lwa.
W
przeszłości region Mangistau był zamieszkany przez Turkmenów, którzy przybyli w
te okolice ok. X wieku A.D, w poszukiwaniu wody i trawiastych pól. Legenda
niesie, że gdy lokalni mieszkańcy okolic Sherkala zostali zaatakowani przez
wroga, prawdopodobnie Kazachów, ukryli się oni w górze i zdołali się bronić przez
4 miesiące. Najeźdźcy zachodzili w głowę skąd ludzie ukrywający się w górze
biorą wodę jednak po opłaceniu lokalnego zdrajcy odkryli, że przez środek góry
biegnie głęboka studnia. Najeźdźcy wykopali tunel i przejęli studnię tym samym
odcinając dopływ wody. Lokalna ludność musiała się poddać…
Najlepszym,
nie-agencyjnym, sposobem aby zobaczyć górę jest złapanie marszrutki lub gazelle
do Shetpe/ Bazaar. Z dworca autobusowego w Aktau marszrutki odchodzą często,
580 KZT- w jedną stronę; 2 godz. jazdy. Są też taksówki, spod bazaru w Aktau, gotowe
zawieźć turystów do Shetpe lub nawet prosto do Sherkala za ok. 5000-7000KZT. Jeżeli
jedziecie marszrutką, w Shetpe bądźcie przygotowani na poważne targowanie się.
Taksówka spod bazaru w Shetpe do Sherkala, w dwie strony + czas oczekiwania i
okazyjne przystanki na zdjęcia kosztuje ok. 3000 KZT. Myślę że dałoby się to
zrobić już za 2000-2500 KZT jeżeli Wam się poszczęści …
